SUPPORTED BY THE HOUSTON ARTS ALLIANCE INDIVIDUAL ARTIST GRANT

Moody Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new drawings by Michael Bise. This exhibition is supported by the 2014 Houston Arts Alliance Individual Artist Grant. Bise's work consists primarily of large-scale graphite drawings that combine autobiographical narrative with labor-intensive attention to detail, creating a disorienting relationship between personal psychology and formal picture making concerns.

Michael Bise was born in Flagstaff, Arizona and moved to Dallas, Texas in 1990. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting at the University of North Texas in 2001 and his Masters of Fine Art in drawing and painting at the University of Houston in 2005. In 2014 his work was exhibited at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas and the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, Louisiana. His work was also included in the Texas Biennial at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum, San Antonio and a survey of his drawings was on view at the Galveston Arts Center in 2013. In 2012 he was awarded The Hunting Art Prize, an Artadia Finalist, and a Nominee for the Texas Contemporary Award. He has also exhibited at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, Dallas, Fort Worth Contemporary Arts at TCU, and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. He regularly contributes criticism and reviews for the online art journal Glasstire.

The exhibition New Drawings is on view at Moody Gallery from Saturday, March 28, 2015 through Saturday, April 25, 2015. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, March 28 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm with an artist talk at 3:00 pm.

Professor Robert Jessup featured at The MAC

5/10/14 – 6/28/14

Robert JessupSelections – New Work: 2013-2014

An opening reception will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary, located at 3120 McKinney Avenue, in the Uptown District of Dallas.

Exhibitions will be on view through June 28, 2014.

The MAC welcomes Robert Jessup for a solo exhibition in the New Works Space this summer. Selections – New Work: 2013-2014 includes selected paintings from the past year, which explore his journey into a “free play of form”. The intuitive, non-representational form making gives his paintings an open ended resolution, keeping singularity in meaning out of his works. Having identity without being identifiable, the paintings are free to speak for themselves through an abstract visual narrative.

For more information, please go to the MAC website.

ROBERT JESSUP: NEW PAINTINGS

February 22 - March 22, 2014

These pictures are the result of intuitive, non-representational form-making interacting with the mental forces that want to imagistically bind visual elements together. I have been trying to invent configurations that stop just short of representation, configurations that have identity without being identifiable. I have wanted there to be the feel of drama and the sense of narrative without the presence of recognizable images or symbols. Neither abstract nor figurative but still imbued with the current of a story. -Robert Jessup

Professor Matthew Bourbon featured in New American Paintings

In the Studio: Process of a Painting with Matthew Bourbon by New American Paintings

Matthew Bourbon (NAP #90, #102) creates a wonderful balance in his paintings – he fills organic shapes and figures with loud, bold, geometric shapes. Rather than seeming meddlesome or intrusive, though, these shapes look and feel quite at home in the spaces they occupy. To read more, click here!

Yuma Symposium 2013

Yuma Art Symposium is referred to as “comfort food for hungry artist,” a back yard BBQ that got out of hand.

Taken from the web site:
The Yuma Symposium is a series of demonstrations, lectures and slide presentations given by both internationally recognized and emerging artists who have demonstrated unusual talent.

Activities include an exhibit of work by presenters and a student show, the National Saw, File, & Solder Sprints, Show Your Stuff night, the annual pin auction, shopping and eating in Algodones, Mexico, and a fiesta and dance on Saturday night.

This year was the 34th Yuma Symposium. In attendance representing UNT CVAD:

CVAD Faculty: James Thurman and Harlan Butt

Graduate Students in Studio Art: Hetty Estes, Tamar Navama, Joy Ude, Chesley Williams, William Bridges, Fari Rahimi, and Liana Tomchesson

Undergraduate in Studio Art: Dani Manning

In this year’s National Saw, File and Solder Sprints the UNT team (Hetty Estes, Tamar Navama, and Liana Tomchesson) won the “Style Award” trophies.

Extending an invitation to all of CVAD, we will be hosting “Spirit of Yuma,” an event on April 25 to promote next year’s symposium.
