Motivating Through Play

Instead of Manipulating Through Rewards

Please join Dr. Scott Nicholson as he explains the use of game design concepts to create a layer on a real world setting. Typically, gamification focuses on the use of rewards like points and badges to change the behavior of users. Rewards can cause long-term damage to intrinsic motivation, however, so Dr. Nicholson has focused on developing the concept of meaningful gamification as a way to build intrinsic motivation.

Dr. Nicholson is an Associate Professor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies and Director of the Because Play Matters game lab and the Game Designers' Guild of Syracuse. He is an alumnus of the Interdisciplinary PhD program in Information Science at UNT. During 2011-2012, he was a visiting professor at MIT in Comparative Media Studies and the GAMBIT game lab. Dr. Nicholson is a published board game designer, wrote the book Everyone Plays at the Library, and was an academic reference librarian at Texas Christian University. He hosts a research blog at http://becauseplaymatters.com.

The College of Information sponsors a Colloquium Series at which renowned researchers and professionals address topics of interest to students and faculty. The goal of the series is to nurture the community of scholars and provide opportunities for faculty and students to engage in the scholarly and research life of the College and the University.

On November 8th and 9th, Dallas Contemporary will celebrate its 35th Birthday with 35 consecutive hours of free community programming. The event will include artist talks, hands-on workshops, live performances, a pop-up exhibition featuring 35 local artists, and much more. To ensure this event is a success, we are trying to recruit a large group of volunteers. Please share this volunteer opportunity with your students. Volunteering for this event will surely be an educational and rewarding experience for any art student. Making a false threat is now considered a felony

The following message is mandated by Texas Law, House Bill 1284

Making a false threat at any Texas higher education institution is now considered a state jail felony, not a Class A misdemeanor, according to a new law passed this summer by the Texas Legislature.

House Bill 1284 was enacted in response to several threats this past year at several universities across the U.S. that disrupted classes and prompted evacuation of campus property, even though the reports turned out to be a hoax. A false threat can be communicated through any means (email, phone, in writing, verbally, social media, etc).

The Texas bill relates to the offense of making or causing a false alarm or report involving a public or private institution of higher education. A person commits an offense under Section 42.06, Texas Penal Code, if he or she knowingly initiates, communicates or circulates a report of a present, past, or future bombing, fire, offense, or other emergency that he or she knows is false or baseless and that would ordinarily:

1. Cause action by an official or volunteer agency organized to deal with emergencies; 
2. Place a person in fear of imminent serious bodily injury; or 
3. Prevent or interrupt the occupation of a building, room, place of assembly, place to which the public has access, or aircraft, automobile, or other mode of conveyance.

An individual adjudged guilty of a state jail felony shall be punished by confinement in a state jail for any term of not more than two years or less than 180 days and, in addition to confinement, may be punished by a fine not to exceed $10,000.

UNT students should be aware that the State of Texas takes these threats seriously, and the legal consequences, which are severe, go beyond anything that the University’s Code of Student Conduct will address.

UNT Students help celebrate Mary Kay's 50th!

This is a video about the mural commissioned by Mary Kay to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company. The mural is set to break the Guinness World Record for the largest mural make solely of makeup. Many Studio Art majors are helping with this project and some are shown working on the mural in the video!

The only work eligible for this event will be original works of Fine Art. Upper Valley Art League will disqualify any entry upon arrival that does not meet the above standards.

Sales:
The Upper Valley Art League will not charge a commission for any original work of art sold during this event. Artist is welcome to price their work as they wish. The only requirement being that they clear their work through the Upper Valley Art League before you display it. Again we are promoting original works of art not reproductions.

Students needed for Eagle Ambassador Scholarship

Applications are now available for the 2013-2014 Eagle Ambassador staff.

This on-campus job pays students $8.25 per hour and they receive a $2,500 scholarship.

The Eagle Ambassadors introduce more than 20,000 prospective students, parents and visitors to the University of North Texas each year. They are also responsible for the daily operation of the Eagle Student Service Center Campus Tour and Information Desk, assisting the Undergraduate Admissions Office with recruitment efforts and serving the President’s Office as student representatives at various events.

Primary functions of this job are to give tours, work the campus tour desk, be a student recruiter and work events for the President’s office. Minimum requirements are listed in the application packet, but we do require a 2.8 cumulative and semester GPA and full-time student status. I am looking for well-spoken, relatable students who genuinely love UNT and would be good role models for prospective students.

Guest Lecturer Barbara Goldstein, Nov 6

Next week, don't miss what promises to be a great presentation by Barbara Goldstein, director of the public art program for the City of San Jose. This presentation is part of our work with the UNT Art in Public Places Program (APPP) and is meant to help us be an informed community. As UNT's Percent for Art program grows, say with a new Union or other major construction, we will benefit from hearing from people like Barbara about possibilities!

Ms. Goldstein has extensive expertise in integrating artworks with architectural spaces and building relationships between art and the communities who use those spaces. In addition to her work in San Jose, Ms. Goldstein has managed the public art programs in Seattle and Los Angeles.
